The Pulmonary and Critical Care team also looks after the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where seriously ill patients are cared for by specially trained staff. The Intensive care unit in Abdali Hospital is equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities for patients with severe and life-threatening illnesses and injuries, which require constant, close monitoring; support from specialists; and medications in order to ensure normal body functions. Patients may be transferred directly to an intensive care unit from an emergency department; from a ward if they deteriorate; or immediately after very invasive surgeries or where the patient is at high risk of complications.

Thoracic surgery services

Thoracic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with diseases that affect the chest, from the chest wall to the lungs and vital structures located between the lungs (Mediastinum), esophagus and the diaphragm.

 

This surgical division works in close relation with other medical specialities to help in diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases.

 

In our division we perform open thoracotomy, the modern VATS procedures (Video Assisted Thoracoscopic surgeries) Multiport, as well as the most advanced minimal invasive surgeries (the Uniport VAT).

 

Our service includes:

Chest wall

  • All cases of trauma related to chest, including modern treatment of flail chest and multiple rib fractures by using rib stabilizers
  • Chest wall deformities Nuss Procedure (minimal invasive correction of chest wall deformities)
  • Benign and malignant chest wall tumors, resection and reconstruction

 

Pleura

  • All diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for pleural diseases

 

Lung

  • Staging and surgical treatment of lung cancer, working actively with pulmonologists to diagnose
  • Treating benign lung diseases like hydatid cyst of the lung and others

 

Mediastinum

  • All diagnostic procedures (Video assisted mediastinoscopy),
  • Therapeutic procedures, including multiport and uniportal VAT Thymectomy for patients with myasthenia gravis, working with neurologists; and thoracoscopic sympathectomy for patients with hyperhidrosis palmaris, working with dermatologists

 

Airway

  • Rigid bronchoscopy dilatation of tracheal stenosis and tracheal resection for benign tracheal stenosis

 

Esophagus

  • Treating benign esophageal diseases (Lap Hillers myotomy for achalasia) and types of Esophagectomy for malignant esophageal tumors, working in close relation with the gastroenterology team

 

Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit is covered by Board-Certified Critical Care physicians which is a focused Specialty, separate from Pulmonary and has its own board and training requirements, ensuring our patients get the best care. The intensive care department consists of 20 rooms, which include isolation rooms for patients with risk of infections. Abdali Hospital also has a Coronary Care unit specialized in cardiac cases; and a High Dependency Unit, for patients that require close monitoring but are not in a critical stage. All our critical care areas have:

  • Physician-led care at all times
  • Twice daily ICU Rounds led by our board-certified Critical Care physicians
  • Fully supported service with daily input from microbiology, pharmacy, dietetics, physiotherapy and other specialist services when needed.

  • Dedicated board-certified Critical Care physicians for the ICU
  • All patients followed up on the ward by the critical care outreach team
  • Quality indicators are reviewed by the Clinical Governance on a quarterly basis
  • Medical Report sent to referral Doctors
