Speech-Language Pathology concerns managing disorders of speech, language, communication, voice, feeding and swallowing. 

Our speech-language pathologists’ team provides people with effective communication and safe feeding and swallowing.

Our team practices the profession within an ethical and evidence-based framework, recognizes the highest quality standards, and embraces the latest research findings. 

Our Clinical Services

Our speech-language pathologists work independently and as a part of multidisciplinary teams. We assess and treat human communication disorders, voice disorders and/or swallowing impairment in children and adults related to a wide range of conditions such as:

  • Swallowing and voice problems that result from ear nose and throat treatment including surgery
  • Communication or swallowing difficulties that result from neurological conditions including, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, head injury and neurosurgery
  • Communication problems and swallowing difficulties derived from the need for temporary or permanent breathing support involving use of a tracheotomy tube
  • Swallowing or communication difficulties due to cancers of the head or neck
  • Speech and language difficulties as a result of genetic disorders
  • Language delays/disorders including expressive and receptive language skills as well as Aphasia (language loss relating to brain injury)
  • Motor speech disorders including apraxia (difficulty sequencing speech sounds) and dysarthria (slurred, slowed speech)
  • Lack of fluency in speech including stuttering
  • Cognitive/linguistic functioning includes problem-solving, memory, abstract reasoning

Quality Measures

  • Therapy Outcome Measures (TOMs) is used by our professionals to monitor change over time in response to interventions
  • Seamless multidisciplinary referral links with other services in the hospital
  • The service adheres to the principles of clinical governance and standards set by the Joint Commission International and Health Care Accreditation Council.
