Histopathology Lab Supervisor

Job Summary

Supervises all operational and technical aspects of the pathology lab Section including all histopathology procedures, cytopathology and frozen section. Performs and supervise the immunohistochemistry and special staining procedures (Manual and Automated), Preferable additional experience in immunofluorescence microscopy techniques.

Performs supervisory functions including preparing the staff work schedules, monitoring staff performance to provide input for formal evaluations and training, writing various pathology procedures and implement safety and quality procedures at the pathology lab.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervises and coordinates the activities of subordinates.

2. Prioritizes and coordinates section activities in relationship to departmental functions.

3. Designs quality controls, quality assurance practices as per departmental and sectional established guidelines.

4. Ability to interpret, implement accreditation standards.

5.  Writing, reviewing & updating SOPs.

6. Ensures adequate inventory for the laboratory and orders supplies and materials from vendors.

7. Plans, develops, formulates, and writes policies and procedures for the laboratory tests.

8. Determines which products and techniques to use, ensuring they are the most modern and cost-effective procedures.

9. Performs and reviews quality controls on testing and decides if results are within acceptable range, research problems and corrects.

10.  provides technical support to other medical technologists and clinicals through recommendations of appropriate diagnostic procedures.

11. Operates, calibrates, and conducts performance checks on clinical laboratory equipment.

12. Ensure timely reporting of results to clinical staff and assists clinical staff in interpretation of results, as needed.

13. Validates accuracy of assigned laboratory reports, verifies that abnormal results have been reviewed or investigated and that panic results are promptly communicated to the treating physician.

14. Assists in the preparation and management of the laboratory budget.

15. Experienced in supervisory practices and principles.

16. Is knowledgeable of the principles, practices, and techniques of advanced medical laboratory work.

17. Ability to effectively communicate.

18. Follow safety policies, universal precautions and hazardous material management and waste policies. 

19. Learns, understand and ensures implementation and observe of all existing/new polices related to CAP, JCI and any accreditation arises.

20.   Participate in continuing medical education CME as defined by department.

21. Understand /implements Ah established policies related to safety, safety codes and other

related safety policies and evacuation codes etc.

22. Maintains the highest integrity and professionalism. and patient confidentiality.

23. Performs other duties as assigned or directed by the manager.

   

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Education I Licensure (essential minimum requirement):

  • Master/bachelor’s from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related area of specialty.
  • Certification/registration or certification/registry eligible as a Medical Technologist, when available.

Professional Experience (essential minimum requirement):

  • 4 years of working experience after the master’s degree.
  • 10 years of working experience after the bachelor’s degree.

Specialized Knowledge (desirable):

  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent command of (English Writing & Speaking)
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Writing SOPs.

Competencies

  • should be competent with: 
  • Preanalytical phase (specimen handling, instrument maintenance, calibration and quality control run) 
  • Analytical phase (reagent, instrumentation & equipment, technique)
  • Postanalytical phase (result interpretation & documentation, computer system & LIS)
  • Compliance with safety and PPE precautions.

Working conditions

  • Supervise routine and special laboratory procedures, covers after hours, holiday duties if required by
  • laboratory manager.
