Endoscopy Registered Nurse

Job Summary

The Staff Nurse provides clinical care to and supports the patient due for any kind of endoscopic procedure, the endoscopy nurse must have the ability to work effectively both independently and within a multi-disciplinary/ multi-cultural team in the Endoscopy unit to deliver the highest quality of care. He/she has to accompany the patient and the physician during and post the procedure providing all needed care & arrangement for such patient population and ensuring that all standards for processing of endoscopes are maintained. 


   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical

  • Practice in accordance with the professional, ethical and legal framework for nursing.
  • Assess the patient’s care needs and plan, implement and evaluate programs of care that reflect the needs of patients in the Endoscopy Unit and their significant others.
  • Undertake nursing interventions based on best available evidence.
  • Take appropriate action in relation to all emergencies and control of infection issues within sphere of responsibility.
  • Ensure that essential information regarding the patient’s condition and progress is recorded by self and team in accordance with AH guidelines.
  • Take immediate and appropriate action in relation to adverse incident reporting utilizing the hospital incident reporting system and report same according to AH policies.
  • Ensure environmental cleanliness of care setting and that own practice and that of all colleagues within care setting reflects the AH Infection Control Policies & Procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of current developments in Endoscopy and the implications these may have on nursing care, related educational programs and expenditure.
  • Undertake other clinical activities as designated by the unit Manager or their designee.
  • Check the readiness of the patient for the procedure according AH competency. 
  • Complete the documentation requirements as per AH policy.
  • Communicate with the patient and provide psychological support as needed.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Prepare the scopes and the needed equipment according to the requested procedure.
  •  Demonstrate the needed skills and knowledge needed to charge the patient for the used items and procedure.
  • Prepare the cleaning solutions related to the different types of scopes according to the manufacture instructions and per AH policy.
  • Do the needed cleansing whenever needed and according to the manufacture recommendations and as per AH competency
  • Follow AH infection control and CSSD instructions when do sterilization 
  • Demonstrate all competencies related to endoscopic procedures and help the physician in handling scopes and taking samples.
  • Take vital signs as doctor order and AH policy.
  • Has the ability to deal with all types of machines and equipment’s related to endoscopy room  
  • Be able to recover all patients after finishing the procedure.

 

Management

  • Act as a role model and assist in providing professional support to junior colleagues, learners and non-registered clinical support staff within the nursing environment.
  • Provide professional support to senior staff.
  • Ensure all quality initiatives within the care environment are integrated into clinical practice and that the highest standards of care are maintained.
  • Develop effective communications between all members of staff, patients and relatives.
  • Identify and assess potential risks in work activities and to report identified risks to appropriate person.
  • Ensure all medical devices within the endoscopy room are maintained in safe working order and are used in compliance with the manufacturer’s instructions and AH policies.
  • Take charge of the ward in the absence of the unit Manager when requested.
  • At all times provide a caring service and to treat those with whom they come into contact in a courteous and respectful manner keeping in mind the specific needs of patients in the Endoscopy Unit.
  • Carry out their duties and responsibilities in a manner which assures the safety of patients, general public, other staff and self.
  • Demonstrate their commitment by their regular attendance and the efficient completion of all tasks allocated to them and any other task as assigned.
  • Demonstrate all skills needed to support and satisfy the GI doctors

Staff Development

  • Act as a role model and ensure the provision of a learning environment.
  • Assist Ward Manager to identify educational needs of staff, develop programs to meet these needs and help towards their professional development.
  • Actively participate in staff development and performance review.
  • Assist the Ward/Unit Manager in the effective implementation of the departmental induction programs.
  • Team responsibilities – Demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to facilitate unit function, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Team player: Responsible to maintain team sprite and professional communication inside her/his unit   

Teaching

  • Provide formal and informal teaching in both classroom and clinical setting as requested.
  • Prepare and provide learning materials for use within the clinical area as requested.
  • In the absence of the Ward Manager, ensure that mentors and new staff are allocated and work the same off duty during the initial induction period.  Review progress of new staff members through assessment, timely progress reports and completion of induction programs.
  • Trainer and educator: Work as a preceptor inside her/his unit to orient and train new employee

Health & Safety

  • Promote adherence to Health & Safety Policies
  • Cooperate with the organization in ensuring that statutory regulations, codes of practice and other applicable health & safety rules are adhered to.

Quality and Accreditation

  • Support the efforts of the AH in achieving accreditation.  Adhere to all defined standards, processes, policies and procedures and cooperate fully with every initiative to secure accreditation.
  • Participate in the development of policies or in change management activities.
  • Adhere to hospital mission & vision 
  • Reflect the values and philosophy of nursing department in AH
  • Adhere to infection control policies.
  • Assist with risk assessments and complete incident reports as appropriate through relevant hospital systems.
  • Participate in unit-based quality improvement activities, KPI’s and auditing activities to monitor and improve standards of care.
  • Environmental responsibilities – maintains a safe, clean, environment for patient/team members.

Confidentiality

  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting to ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times in conjunction with the organization’s confidentiality policy.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records.

  • Knowledge of different types of endoscopic procedures. 


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: 

  ESSENTIAL:  

  • BSc. in Nursing.
  • Nursing License
  • Computer literate.

DESIRABLE: 

  • Evidence of post registration qualification in Endoscopy an advantage.
  • Evidence of continuous education.
  • Valid BLS

WORK EXPERIENCE:       

ESSENTIAL: 

  • RN  2-4 years’ experience as a Staff Nurse in Endoscopy.
  • English language proficiency

DESIRABLE:

  • RN More than 3 years’ experience in endoscopy.
